A hi-vis safety vest is a fluorescent garment with retro-reflective bands that makes workers visible to vehicles and machinery. It is used on roads, construction sites, warehouses, ports and industrial plants, especially where traffic, moving equipment or low light create a collision risk.

Under EN ISO 20471, the class depends on the minimum area of visible material. Class 1 has the least and suits low-risk areas, Class 2 suits moderate traffic or low light, and Class 3 has the most material and suits high-speed traffic, night work and poor visibility.

Choose a full body harness rated for the worker's weight plus tools, with the right number of attachment points for the task, and pair it with a suitable lanyard or lifeline. For scaffold work, a double rope lanyard with scaffold hooks allows continuous connection while moving.

Inspect a harness before every use for cuts, fraying, burns, corroded hardware and damaged stitching, and have a competent person inspect it formally at regular intervals, commonly every six to twelve months. Replace it immediately after a fall arrest or if damaged, and follow the manufacturer's service life.

Lifespan depends on the manufacturer, material and exposure to sun, heat and chemicals, and is commonly three to five years from manufacture. Replace any helmet straight away after a significant impact or if it shows cracks, brittleness or deformation.

S1 shoes have a protective toecap, closed heel, antistatic and energy-absorbing sole. S1P adds a penetration-resistant midsole against nails. S3 adds a water-resistant upper and a cleated outsole for wet or rough sites.

Polycarbonate lenses are lightweight, highly impact resistant and block most ultraviolet radiation, which makes them a strong choice for dust, flying particles and general industrial eye protection. Look for anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings for longer wear.
